Festival Neruda Events at the Red Poppy Art House

Red Poppy's mission is to put art out into the community, and we've put on many diverse events across the country since we started in 2004. Mark Eisner has toured around the world with the rough cut of the first version of our movie, then entitled ¡Pablo Neruda! ¡Presente!, giving talks, workshops, and readings along with the screening. The movie has been shown publicly in sixteen different colleges from UCLA to the Grand Rapids (MI) Community College's Neruda Centennial Celebration and in festivals including the Trieste, Italy's Latin American Film Festival to the International Poetry Festival in Rotterdam, Holland. We are no longer screening the first version, as we continue to craft the new version.

We continue to throw parties, readings, and other fun events around the world. Recent invents including co-presenting Chilean Films at the 11th International Latino Film Festival- San Francisco Bay Area. And we continue to have awesome birthday party's for Pablo every July 12th.

To hear about upcoming events, including the launch of the new version of the documentary, planned for 2008:

There's also amazing concerts, art shows, and other happenings at the Red Poppy Art House in San Francisco's Mission District. We supported and collaborated with the Art House's founder and co-director Todd Brown during a crucial stage in 2004. The Art House has grown amazingly since then, being named "Best All Around Art Venue" by 7X7 SF. Check out the Art House's site for upcoming music, art, dance, and more. The turnout was so big, despite cramming the Art House to the rafters (literally,) not every one could get in.

Two of the most wonderful women in the Red Poppy family, Barbara Paschke, who shared some of her beautifully crafted translations from poets around the world, and Jennifer Barone of The WordParty electrified the audience with a passionate reading of Neruda’s "Poet's Obligation" and “Ode to the Tomato" alongside her original Ode to the Tomato. She also read "Poetry Like Bread is for Everyone,” from her recent book, Secret City, which was inspired by a quote from Neruda.

Another Pablo was present during the evening, Pablo Rosales! He impressed the crowd with not only his dapper appearance, but the Neruda poetry he recited from memory. He also read Neruda-inspired poems from his recently published book, Poems in the Palm of My Head.

Our compañero Adrian Arias prepared his famous native-Peruvian ceviche recipe while reciting Neruda's poetry in Spanish, weaving a beautiful metaphor of poetry and food. Poetry is like bread, poetry like ceviche! Be sure to check out Adrian’s amazing poetic creations on his blogspot.
